‘TRAGABALAS’ AND ‘PEÑA’: TEEN SUSPECTS ARRESTED AFTER DOCTOR’S FATAL AMBUSH ON THE PAN-AMERICAN HIGHWAY

Two teenagers, aged 15 and 17 and known by the aliases ‘Tragabalas’ and ‘Peña,’ were arrested in Naranjal following a deadly ambush that claimed the life of physician Juan Pablo T., 47, on the Pan-American Highway near the Jaime Roldós area in the early hours of November 9, 2025. The doctor was traveling with his family toward Machala when assailants opened fire after the vehicle stopped. His sister-in-law suffered a shoulder wound and was transferred to Machala’s IESS hospital, according to preliminary police reports.

The attack involved multiple shots fired from roadside brush, shattering the vehicle’s windshield and doors. Forensic teams collected 14 spent 9 mm casings and a deformed bullet at the scene, demonstrating the ambush’s intensity. The victim’s wife confirmed there was no prior pursuit or incident, supporting the hypothesis of a premeditated attack along the rural Naranjal–Balao–Machala corridor.

Authorities from DINASED and the Intervention and Support Group launched an immediate operation, inspecting nearby farms, reviewing security cameras, and interviewing residents. A house in the same area was identified as the hideout of the two minors allegedly linked to the attack: José Alejandro Ch. B. (17) and José Antonio A. P. (15), ‘Peña’ and ‘Tragabalas.’ The Prosecutor’s Office coordinated the body’s removal and transfer to the Naranjal morgue while forensic procedures and family and witness interviews were conducted.

Preliminary investigations link the teenagers to at least two other homicides in the region, including a September 20, 2025, killing of corn-milk vendor José Ítalo L. in the Cien Familias sector, Balao, based on similarities in modus operandi, location, and firearms. Authorities are also probing whether the minors belonged to a criminal structure operating between Balao and Naranjal, associated with robberies, revenge attacks, and contract killings along rural routes.

The case has raised concern over interprovincial route security and the involvement of minors in violent crimes. Juvenile justice measures, hearings, and investigative processes are ongoing. Communities along the Naranjal–Machala corridor remain on alert, with increased police patrols at key Pan-American checkpoints following the fatal ambush. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activity while authorities continue to secure vulnerable stretches of the highway.
