Protests Loom as Administration Targets Dissent and Press Freedom

Attorney Matthew Kellegrew of the Civil Liberties Defense Center affirms that despite the President’s boasts, his orders do not actively criminalize constitutionally protected forms of protest or establish new charges. Instead, the directives reveal a strategy to create a “fascist aesthetic” and political justification for targeting the opposition. Kellegrew described the language in NSPM-7 as “culture war language bleeding into operating law,” noting that it fails to describe anything “real.”
The administration’s strategy appears to involve investigating the funding of liberal groups. Anonymous officials leaked a list of organizations—including ActBlue and Indivisible—that the White House suggests are tied to protests where “violence” occurred, indicating a desire to destabilize the network of major Democratic donors like George Soros and Reid Hoffman. As the administration pushes for the deployment of federal troops in blue cities, resistance is taking creative forms, with peaceful protesters in places like Portland adopting the giant frog as a symbol of resistance to make the “antifa terrorist” claims look “silly.” The message from civil liberties advocates to activists preparing for the week ahead is clear: know your rights, stay safe online, and do not disengage.
